Accessibility

This site is built to be read by anyone who needs to read it — including on an old phone, on a slow connection, with text enlarged, or with a screen reader.

What this site does

  • Text can be enlarged from the strip at the top of every page, and the choice is remembered. Browser zoom works as well, to 200%, without content being cut off.
  • A high-contrast setting is available from the same strip, and sits on top of whichever light or dark theme is in use.
  • Every page begins with a skip link to the main content.
  • Colour is never the only way information is conveyed, and text meets a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 against its background in both themes.
  • Every control can be reached and operated from the keyboard, and the focus outline is always visible.
  • Headings, lists, tables and landmarks use real HTML elements, so a screen reader announces the structure rather than a wall of text.
  • The only motion on the site is the record filling in on the homepage. It runs once, and not at all when the browser reports a preference for reduced motion.
  • Pages are readable and usable at a phone width, with no horizontal scrolling.

What is not done yet

Stated plainly, because an accessibility statement that lists only successes is not worth reading.

  • The site is available in English and Hindi. The remaining languages of the Eighth Schedule are planned. The language list only ever offers a language that is complete, because a half-translated page about child safety is worse than an English one.
  • A formal third-party accessibility audit has not been carried out.
  • The school transport study and the administrative pages have not been assessed to the same standard as this site.
